The core of my work is as a design/build teacher at Laney College. While my pedagogy is ever evolving there are some fundamental principles that guide my classes. Traditionally, 'shop' classes have been stifling and rigid environments where only a few students feel at ease. My emphasis is on the heuristic process of learning: trying things out, making mistakes and learning from them, reflecting on how to do something differently and feeling a sense of empowerment through skill-building. Being able to draw something from ones own head AND be able to build it with their hands is one of the most satisfying experiences one can have. My purpose is to nurture someone's idea and help make it a built reality. I also strive to make the shop environment a welcoming and accessible place for all students, not just CIS white males.
